Why Is My Outdoor AC Unit Not Turning On?

If your outdoor AC unit will not turn on, the cause is usually one of six things: the thermostat, a tripped float switch, a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a worn contactor, or a refrigerant safety control. 1. Thermostat

If you inspect a thermostat, disconnect power first and photograph the existing wiring before changing anything. If the indoor or outdoor unit runs on its own, or the system never satisfies, the thermostat may need professional diagnosis.

2. Float Switch

A tripped float switch is another common reason an outdoor unit will not run. As your air conditioner pulls humidity from the home, water drains through a condensate line. If that line clogs, the float switch rises and interrupts the 24-volt control circuit to help prevent water damage.

Some systems are wired so the thermostat goes blank, while others only stop the outdoor unit. Both methods protect your home. In most cases the switch itself has not failed. 3. Breaker

4. Capacitor

Manufacturers typically allow a tolerance of about ±6% from the capacitor’s rated value. Because capacitors can hold dangerous energy even after power is disconnected, homeowners should not attempt replacement.

5. Contactor

The contactor is a heavy-duty electrical relay. It uses the 24-volt signal from the thermostat to energize a magnetic coil, and when energized, the contact points close and send high-voltage power to the compressor and outdoor fan motor.

Over time those contact points become worn, pitted, or burned. Debris such as dirt, grass clippings, ants, roaches, and other insects can also interfere with operation. 6. Refrigerant Safety Controls

Modern HVAC systems use high- and low-pressure safety switches to protect the compressor. High pressure from restricted airflow, condenser fan problems, or an improper charge can shut the outdoor unit down. Low pressure from leaks or airflow issues can interrupt operation too.

Many systems enter a protective lockout after repeated pressure faults. Diagnosing these problems takes specialized equipment and training. Rather than resetting the system or adding refrigerant, the underlying cause should always be found and corrected.
